HUNT AND SWAIN OFF JUBILEE STREET

On a breezy afternoon at Saxby Road mid table E.Shilton were asked to bat on a green but flat wicket and made 159 all out in 40 overs. The impressive Redwood again claiming a five wicket haul assisted by Clayton 2-18, Smith 1-40 and  Karl Tew 2-29 in his first game of the season.

Given Melton's strong batting line up 160 did not look too daunting a task until E.Shiltons Miller reduced the home side to 9 for 3 in 9 overs and in trouble.  Simon Maggs (22) and Redwood (24) sensibly and steadily rebuilt the innings before both departing trying to boost the run rate.  Two more quick wickets followed leaving the hosts on 78 for 7 before Tew joined wicket keeper Bills at the crease and turned the match in Melton's favour with a stand of 73 runs.  Once Bills (23) ran himself out the excellent Tew (51n.o) assisted by Clayton (3n.o) took Melton to their fourth and most exciting victory of the season with 2 overs to spare.

Division 5 leaders Melton suffered a heavy defeat at a very damp Croft on Saturday being asked to bat after losing the toss.  The extensive swing and seam movement reduced the visitors to 49 for 9 with only Wells (11) making double figures.  Skipper Thorpe (34n.o) helped by Darren Smith (34) did at least give Melton a chance with their fighting last wicket stand of 75 in a total of 124 all out.

Taking the field after tea the drying conditions did not give Melton's bowlers the help Croft had enjoyed earlier but at 36 for 3 they still had a chance until 3 vital dropped catches ended the optimism.  Despite Redwood and Stevenson sharing the wickets to fall Grimes (46n.o) and Smith (47n.o) took Croft to victory inside 26 overs ending Melton's three match winning start to the season.

Melton 124  Brown 9, A Thorpe 0, Taylor 2, Redwood 7, Evans 2, Wells 11, Stevenson 7, Culy 2, Smith 34, Ruddle 4, K Thorpe 34n.o

Croft 129 for 3  Redwood 8-1-22-1, Stevenson 7-1-44-2, Smith 6-1-22-0, Ruddle 4-0-13-0, Culy 1-0-18-0

Melton Mowbray Cricket Club  Vs Sproxton

Game Sponsored by L & H Exhausts 01664 562684

Batting first Melton made a strong start with Mike Pratt (84 not out) and Gary Potter (19) scoring freely and notching up 54 for the first wicket. Mike Pratt was then supported by Lee Jones, Darren Elliot and Jamie Curly to see Melton through to 129 for 4 from their 18 overs. Only B.March of Sproxton made any impact with the ball, finishing his 6 over with a well earned 3 for 36.

Sproxton’s response was hampered by some tight bowling from Paul Stevenson (1 for 16) and John Taylor (5 for 17) and never really made a dent on Meltons score. P.Richardson (14) and J. Sayer (14) at opposite ends of the order were the only Sproxton batsmen to reach double figures.

Melton won by 58 runs.

Melton made a convincing start to Division 5 taking a maximum 24 points from their encounter with visitors Narboro.  Strengthened by 4 new signings skipper Kevin Thorpe won the toss and had no hesitation in inviting the visitors to bat.  This proved a good decision as Matt Clayton 2-33, Darren Smith 4-24 and Bobby Mistry 4-36 skittled the visitors for 109 in 40 overs. Ben Redwood also bowled 7  accurate overs for just 14 runs without claiming any wickets on this occasion.

Despite Andy Thorpe running himself out Mark Mabbott and Bob Hendy settled any early nerves and batted cautiously against accurate opening bowling from Narboro.  Batting gradually became easier as the pair built a 99 run stand  taking Melton to a deserved 9 wicket victory, Mabbott unbeaten on 59 and Hendy on 34.

Afterwards skipper Thorpe praised all his players for a good all round performance and gave a special mention to Darren Bills who made an assured debut behind the stumps.
